A BRIDGE TOO FAR

This post is my literal contribution to the eleventh virtual symposium organised by the cult leader humorlife. Contributions to the 'Doors and/or Bridges and/or Gates' virtual symposium can be found at Participants List For The Eleventh Virtual Symposium On Doors andor Bridges andor Gates.

A Bridge Too Far is a classic Second World War film. The bridge pictured above was not too far for this fornicating Estonian couple!

I love bridges. I’m trying to think of a bridge I don’t like but I can’t think of one. Bridges connect places and people. Bridges, they’re quite useful!

My favourite bridge is Waterloo Bridge spanning the River Thames in the heart of London. I like its simple but sleek functionality, particularly in contrast to its pretentious Tower Bridge neighbour.

Another favourite bridge in London is Archway Bridge. Off the tourist trail, the bridge offers amazing panoramic views over the city of London. The views are as good as from Hampstead Heath but with no tourists around to spoil the views!

As far as I’m aware, no American has plans to buy my two favourite London bridges, unlike London Bridge that was bought by the American Robert P McCulloch. In 1867 the bridge was dismantled and transported to Arizona where it was re-built in Lake Havasu City. The bridge was opened in its new home in 1971. It’s an urban myth that the bridge was bought by Robert P McCulloch in the mistaken belief that the bridge was the more famous Tower Bridge!

Going back to my roots in Shropshire, one bridge stands out - the Iron Bridge spanning the River Severn, Britain’s longest river, flowing through the Ironbridge Gorge. Opened in 1781, it was the world’s first arch bridge to be made of cast iron. Though a sleepy rural backwater, Shropshire is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

Last month UNESCO conferred world heritage status on Scotland’s Forth Bridge. It doesn’t take much nowadays to be a World Heritage Site! The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge over the Firth of Forth. When opened in 1890, it was the longest single cantilever bridge in the world; it is still now the second longest. It’s yet another urban myth that once painters have finished painting the bridge that they have to start painting the bridge again.

Outside Britain, the Pont de l'Archevêché is a bridge crossing the Seine river near the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Built in 1828, the bridge is widely known as the Love Bridge. After 45 tons of love padlocks were removed from the neighbouring Pont des Arts in 2010, lovers started to fix padlocks on the Love Bridge. The love padlocks symbolise eternal love; the more romantic souls throw the padlock key into the Seine but the less romantic souls use combination locks that can be removed just in case their love doesn’t last!

Across the Atlantic there’s New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. Completed in 1883, the bridge spans the East River connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn. I believe there is a tradition of lovers placing love padlocks on the bridge, which are periodically removed by the authorities. My affection for this bridge is due to its association with American movies and naked women promenading! Plus it’s near to New Jersey!

One bridge I would very much like to see is San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Also the 25 mile-long China’s Jiaozhou Bay Bridge looks spectacular; it’s the world's longest bridge over water. But the Hussaini Hanging Bridge in Pakistan is definitely a bridge too far!

What’s your nearest bridge?
What’s your favourite bridge?
Have you ever had sex on or under a bridge?

There are lots of bridges in Nottingham as the River Trent and the Nottingham Canal flow through the city. I prefer the dinky old canal bridges than the river bridges.

I’ve never had sex on a bridge or under a bridge. I’ve kissed on a bridge but that’s as far as I’ve gone. Perhaps I’ll have sex on the Golden Gate Bridge when I visit San Francisco!

I love Bridges too and we have a lot of them in Dublin as the city is cut in half by the River Liffey.

My closest bridge is a small one over a pond in the park nearby.

My favourite has to be the Forth bridge it reminds me of my roots.

I have never had sex on or under a bridge.

My favorite bridge is the one I live under. I'm a troll ya know. But, now that I see where your bridges are, I will be in your neighborhood soon.

Once there, I will sow discord by starting arguments and upsetting folks. I will post inflammatory, extraneous, and off-topic messages.

I will provoke and disrupt everything I find in your personal network of bridges...

Unless of course you feed me. Then you're mine! Muhahhh!

What a bitter disappointment it must have been to be the Third and Fifth Bridges.

What’s your nearest bridge?
It's the I94 Freeway bridge over our street a bit north of us.

What’s your favourite bridge?
Twyckenham Bridge in South Bend, Indiana is kind of special to me. It spans the St. Joseph River and we lived about a block from there once. We walked over it and under it quite a lot. It was built in 1929.

Have you ever had sex on or under a bridge?
I don't think so, but I nearly shit myself on the Ambassador bridge between Detroit and Windsor. Traffic stopped with me in my truck on the highest point and the bridge was dancing around in the wind. It was quite unsettling.

Depending on which direction I go, to the north is the abandoned railroad bridge over the Nisqually river, to the south is the highway bridge over those abandoned tracks, to the west is the bike path bridge over a small creek, and to the east is the highway bridge over the Nisqually.
My favorite is Deception Pass bridge (the only bridge to Whidbey Island) though I'm fond of all those old concrete arch bridges along highway one on the Pacific coast.
Unfortunately I have not had sex with a bridge.

What’s your nearest bridge? There are no rivers and no bridges where I live.

What’s your favourite bridge? Half of my life I lived in the city surrounded by water there were over 300 bridges. Most of those bridges are architectural and mechanical masterpieces. It's hard to select just one. I think, Kazanskiy Bridge in this image is lovely.

Have you ever had sex on or under a bridge? Yes to both.

As I live on the water, there are many bridges near me but my favorite is the Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick, Georgia. It crosses the bay and give a beautiful vantage point of the Atlantic ocean and the Brunswick port.
My first kiss was on a bridge. A sweet boy named Kevin convinced me it was the most romantic spot in Erin, NY, even though it was a small bridge over a creek on the flats. LOL I was there visiting my family for the summer. It was a sweet kiss.

First off, thank you for once again being part of the virtual symposium!

Second, thank you for linking to the page with all of the virtual symposium contributors. The whole purpose of this exercise is to get bloggers acquainted with one another... and enabling your readers to enjoy the wide spectrum of other bloggers is very much appreciated.

Finally, thank you for this wonderful travelogue and image-based post. More than any other, this edition of the symposium pushed contributors to use images... to its betterment. And you managed to include some personal narrative, which are always appreciated.

My nearest bridge is the Queensboro bridge, aka the 59th Street bridge of the Simon & Garfunkle song of the same name.

My favorite bridge... I'll leave out the ones in NYC, because why go with home town homerism? I'll take the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway -- but only half the time. Half the time I love it because when I'm on it, it means I'm going to the French Quarter in New Orleans. But half the time I hate it, because when I'm on it it means I'm leaving the French Quarter.

Have I ever had sex on or under a bridge? Gntillhom got there first with the bridgework joke, so I'm just going to quietly tip my hat to him.

Stop in, read, and offer comments at my "swinging as seen in the media" blog, "Confessions of a Lifestyle Man" humorlife, which is also the home of the monthly virtual symposium. New post: The Virtual Symposium Returns Lets Pick A Topic

London is a great city - lots to do and lots to see. It's said that British women are the easiest women in the world to have sex with!
    Thanks for stopping by.
Spunky soon as i get through with the states and have enough money to travel abroad London is my first stop. As for the women I already know about that
I'll certainly give you a call for a London adventure!

What’s your nearest bridge? The Walt Whitman, it is 12.9 miles and about 20 minutes from my house and crosses into Philadelphia.

What’s your favourite bridge? I love the covered bridges of Pennsylvania. PA has the most covered bridges of any state, 200 of them. They are often targets of arsonists. Recently a careless truck driver drove in and got wedged in, greatly damaging the bridge.

If I had to pick a favorite of the ones I know, it would be the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge. It is 23 miles long and goes over and under the Chesapeake bay. There are places to pull off and enjoy the view, you can also visit the gift shop on the bridge. It is so long, I had trouble finding a picture that shows all of it.

You should consider traveling to the mid-Atlantic states sometime. You can visit Assateague Island and Chincoteague Island and see the wild horses. We saw many of them on Assateague, they are beautiful but frightening too as they are rather large and are wild and come very near. If you come at the end of July, you can see the round up. They herd them across the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague, then they auction them off.

Have you ever had sex on or under a bridge? I have not.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge looks amazing.
Does Philadelphia count as mid-Atlantic? I've been there, and I've also visited Washington DC.

I've had sex under a bridge but never on it. I am scared of heights so bridges are beautiful as long as I don't have to cross them. Lol. Interesting read. A BRIDGE TOO FAR
I'm pleased to hear that someone here has had sex under a bridge.
Thanks for your kind words and thanks for stopping by.

It is amazing and a little scary too, especially in the tunnel as the there are spots where water runs through the walls.

"A United States Geological Survey publication describes the Mid-Atlantic Region as all of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, along with the parts of New Jersey, New York, and North Carolina that drain into the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds."

Should you ever happen to visit again, we'd love to meet you and your girlfriend. If you get back to Philly, visit the Franklin Fountain on Market Street. It is an old time soda fountain and ice cream parlor, vintage furnishings and vintage dress for the waitstaff. The shop was once an erotic candy shop and bakery, but has been reborn as a vintage soda fountain/ice cream parlor.
I enjoyed Philadelphia though it was more erundown than I thought it would be. I liked South Street (I think it was called that); it seemed a bit alternative and hippy-ish!

I think much of the east coast is run down. There is a lot of homelessness in Philly and DC which is always saddening to see. South Street is the exit I took to go the UPenn with my dog. He was in a drug trial there at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School and Hospital. My dog has the same allergies as my grandchildren.
I hope you are taking good care of your dog. If not, I'll get kzoo to give it a walk in the woods!

    Oh god don't say that!

Poor Jack is not doing well at all. He was just eating and he had fallen, bum on the floor in quite an unnatural position. He's been having some trouble getting up and down lately. He is ten and weighs 65 pounds, big dogs don't usually live too long. I really hope my grandchildren don't end up remembering this visit as, "the visit when Jack kicked the bucket".
I think kzoo needs to take Jack for a long walk in the woods!

Jack's been sprawling legs out on the floor and it takes two of us to stand him up. He's a bit better tonight, but isn't good on the linoleum floor. The poor thing is in "help I've fallen and can't get up" mode, while Row stands over him, pointing and commanding, sit, stay doggie!

I don't know if that phrase about having fallen means anything to you in the UK, in The States it is from an tv commercial selling "life alert" service. An old person takes a spill and calls for help via a device worn around the neck or wrist, "help I've fallen and can't get up". It has turned into a punchline for a number of jokes here.

    Better send Kzoo quick!
We have those fall alarms here but the term hasn't entered popular usage here.
kzoo is in his way!
