Election Day

Today is election day and for the first time in ten years I will be voting. Not because I have a strong affinity for any of the candidates but because I truly believe that one of the candidates is dangerous and has no business being considered for the presidency. The best part of that sentence is that it could be true of either of the major party's candidates.

This campaign has brought out the worst elements of humanity. It can't end soon enough, but I have a sense that it won't end today, or tomorrow, or even next week. I have a feeling that this will go on for a long time, no matter who wins.

Someone once said something along the lines of "you'll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the average American". This election has proven that.

People used to hide their prejudices, bigotry and general meanness. Now they flaunt it as if it's some badge of honor exhibiting their lack of political correctness.

My social media page has been flooded with this insanity. For the most part I scroll past it. I have succumbed to temptation on a couple of occasions when people who I thought had a bit of sense and integrity posted blatantly false or misleading memes. When presented with factual information challenging their presentation, usually by someone other than me, they doubled down on their falsehoods. They didn't care.

We criticize politicians for their lying and corruption, yet we do the same things and expect them to be different. We follow the same path of avoiding the issues and pandering to emotions. And still criticize the politicians for doing the same thing.

It's not going to get any better. No matter who wins, we all lose.
