Old Man Winter.
Old Man Winter. Snow clogs roads, whiteouts wreak havoc for traffic in Canada's West, East at 01:50 on January 09, 2011, EST. Rob Drinkwater, The Canadian Press Share|EDMONTON - Heavy snow and high winds clogged city streets and blocked highways across much of Alberta and Saskatchewan on Saturday, contributing to a deadly crash east of Calgary. RCMP say a passenger in a car died Saturday afternoon in the crash that involved a Greyhound bus, three semis and six cars on the Trans-Canada Highway near Strathmore, Alta. RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb said police closed the highway after the accident, and that the heavy snow made it difficult for workers to clear the wrecked vehicles and for officers to investigate the crash. "We have zero visibility in many places — whiteout conditions," Webb said about the driving throughout much of the province on Saturday. "We're highly recommending to people to stay home and not be travelling around because you may very likely end up stranded somewhere and having to be rescued." The north-bound lanes of Highway 2 in Alberta _ the main corridor between Edmonton and Calgary _ were also closed to traffic Saturday afternoon when a semi truck jacknifed. Not long after the rig was cleared, the highway was closed in both directions due to extreme conditions, but was open again a few hours later. Environment Canada also issued a blizzard warning in parts of southern Saskatchewan around Kindersley, Rosetown and Biggar. "Right now there's a lot of snowdrifts in town. On the highways, not so much. It just blows right across," said a receptionist at the Nova Hotel in Kindersley, who noted traffic was sparse on Highway 7. "Usually we get quite a few semis going between Calgary and Saskatoon, but not so much today." In Edmonton, more than 20 centimetres of snow had fallen by Saturday afternoon. Some flights at Edmonton International Airport were delayed, but airport spokeswoman Sara Meffen said they were mostly due to the snowfall Saturday morning in Toronto which delayed inbound flights. About 15 centimetres fell on Toronto and the surrounding areas of Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville and Burlington _ far surpassing the five centimetres originally predicted by Environment Canada. The weather led to a spike in car accidents, many of them fender-benders, according to Toronto police. The snow then moved further into southwestern Ontario. Environment Canada issued a weather watch for areas near Sarnia. Those regions could see up to 20 centimetres of snow by Sunday morning. In Nova Scotia, wintry weather contributed to a collision between a pickup truck and a small bus. The crashed near Lake Echo, N.S., in blizzard-like conditions on Highway 107, sent 10 people initially to the emergency room; three of them were admitted to the hospital. Const. Heidi Stevenson said weather was a major factor in the crash. There were whiteout conditions even as police were responding to the accident. The highway was closed for several hours as debris was removed. Bob Dunford with the City of Edmonton said it will be a challenge just getting the snow cleared in time for the Monday morning commute. "The priority right now is on the arterial roadways, the major roadways. That is what we've been focusing on," Dunford said. The snow added an extra challenge for an Edmonton community group's annual winter festival this weekend. But Irene Yauck, an organizer with the Deep Freeze Byzantine Winter Festival, said the snowfall has added atmosphere and is making the festival's ice sculptures and -drawn wagon particularly pretty. "If it gets windy, it'll be nasty but it's not. At this point, it's gorgeous," she added. "We don't stop for things like snow." I am going to put my snow suit on and go out and find him. Then I am going to kick his frosty ass. To get him the hell out of here. It is a nasty job but some one has to do it. I might as well be me. No one else is stepping up to the plate. Some one pore a warm bath for me. I may need it when I get home. This going to be one hell of battle. There will be snow fyling every where. Don't worry about me. I have my back pack and my Thermos full of chicken noddle soup and beef jerky. So I should be Ok. I even have waterproof matches and three lighters, and two cans of gas. And lighter fluid. I just have to get the sled dogs hooked up. Don't tell him I am coming. This is a surprise attack. LOL |
